At long last we are implementing an often-requested feature, and adding salsa bands to Salsa By The Bay! The SF Bay Area is fortunate to have dozens of local salsa, timba, and Latin Jazz bands that share their amazing music with us for our listening and dancing pleasure, and we are happy to finally start featuring them on our site!
In many ways, the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the top places int he country and even the world for salsa music, and few cities can boast as many active Latin musicians as the Bay Area. Local favorite Pacific Mambo Orchestra even won a Grammy Award this year, beating out big names such as Marc Anthony!
Anyway, without further ado, here are the bands we have listed on our site so far:
Avance – A young group of musicians & singers based out of SF
Julio Bravo y Su Orquesta Salsabor – One of the big names in the Bay Area salsa scene
Mazacote – A top salsa band that has played alongside salsa music legends
Montuno Swing – A local favorite with a fast paced, energetic sound
Orquesta Borinquen – Bringing Puerto Rican sounds & rhythms to the Bay Area
Salsón – A Latin Jazz group from the Monterey Bay Area
Anyway, those are just the bands we have added for now! We have at least a dozen more on our list, so be sure to bookmark our bands page and stay tuned for more salsa band profiles coming soon!
Lots going on this month.
The first, and most importantly is the 2013 World Latin Dance Cup! This event is one of the largest salsa competitions in the world, and is taking place in Miami this week. Salsa By The Bay will be providing live coverage of the whole event.
In other news, Montuno dance company is holding open enrollment for their kids team, Montuno Stars! If you saw these kids at SF Congress, then you know how adorable they are! The best way to get good at anything is to start young, so if your kid wants to be the next salsa superstar, then joining this team would be a good first step!
A new site we’ve been experimenting with is Freebase. This is a very cool site, which is basically a huge database of everything and anything! Check out our Freebase profile here.

In other news, I’ve created a new lens on Squidoo! The lens is called Salsa Dancing Quiz, and like the name suggests it features quizes about the history of salsa. Don’t worry if you’re rusty on your history, the lens also features a quick history lesson to refresh your memory.
And that’s all I have for this post. Stay cool, and keep dancing!
Stumbled across an interesting site today via the Google called Curious. If you’re curious to check it out, here’s my profile. Very interesting indeed, they seem to offer a bunch of free online classes on different subjects such as salsa dancing. Pretty neat, and nice little interface too.
